A closed adoption is when there is no identifying information about the birth parent or the adoptive parent that is shared and there is no contact between the two families. A birth parent is welcome to include any pertinent family medical history for the adoptive family. This type of adoption allows privacy for the birth parent. Once the child turns 18 years of age, depending on the laws, they may or may not be able to open the sealed records to find out more information.
An open adoption allows communication and/or visits between the birth parent and the adoptive parents. This can include options like letters, photographs, phone or video calls and sometimes even in-person visits. As a birth parent, you are able to decide what you are comfortable with when considering an open adoption.
A semi-open adoption is in between a closed and open adoption. This allows the birth parent to choose an adoptive family and choose what kind of updates you would like about your child over the years. Often times, the contact between families is done through the adoption agency to protect the birth mother’s privacy. As with all adoptions, as a birth parent, you choose how much or how little you want to be involved.
