Why Should I Get Tested Instead of At-Home?

There are many brands and types of pregnancy tests available for purchase, and the instructions for use can be confusing at times, leading to errors and false positive or negative results. Willow Womens Center uses high-quality medical-grade pregnancy tests in a controlled environment. Results you can count on will be available within a few minutes. Our trained healthcare professionals will interpret the test results for you. They can present information about your options and answer any medical questions you may have after finding out the results. Some women feel better having someone by their side when they find out about the test results, esp. in a high-stress situation of an unexpected pregnancy.

What If My Test Is Positive?

If your pregnancy test result is positive, we can provide you with the written pregnancy verification needed for further medical care.

  • Ultrasound

We may also offer you a no-cost ultrasound. A positive pregnancy test does not confirm a viable pregnancy, however an ultrasound can do that as well as determine how far along you are in your pregnancy. Knowing these critical pieces of information will help identify which pregnancy options are available to you.

If an ultrasound reveals you have a viable pregnancy, we will talk with you about your pregnancy options and answer all your questions.

Plan B, often called the “Morning After Pill,” is a high-dosage birth control pill that women can take up to 72 hours after unprotected sex. It ends a pregnancy by preventing an egg from being released, interfering with a woman’s menstrual cycle, or preventing an embryo from implanting in the uterus. Some side effects include nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, headaches, and vomiting.

  • STI Testing

We may also offer you no-cost sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing if your pregnancy test is positive. The most common STIs (chlamydia and gonorrhea) are usually symptomless, so we provide this testing for your protection. If you have an abortion with an undiagnosed/untreated STI, you can develop a serious infection of your reproductive system called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). If you choose to continue your pregnancy, an untreated STI puts you and your pregnancy at risk.

  • What Happens When You Visit

Upon your arrival at Willow Womens Center, we will make a copy of your photo ID.

Next, you will meet with our Client Advocate, who will gather some demographic information and talk with you about your current situation and any concerns you may have.

Afterwards, you will be escorted to our medical suite to provide a urine sample for your pregnancy test (and STI screening, if applicable). Our medical staff will take a brief medical history and determine if you meet our guidelines for performing an ultrasound.

For optimal results and accurate measurements, it is best if you are at least 6 weeks past your last menstrual cycle. If you brought a guest to your appointment, they can join us (with your permission) once an image is captured on the monitor. Before you leave, we will make sure to answer any questions you may have and hand out materials to review. We may offer a repeat ultrasound if you are interested in monitoring the progress of your pregnancy, especially since scheduling an OB appointment can take some time.

Early Signs of Pregnancy

Early signs of pregnancy can vary, but common symptoms often appear within the first few weeks after conception. One of the earliest and most recognizable signs is a missed menstrual period. Other initial indicators include tender or swollen breasts, often accompanied by darkening of the areolas. Many women also experience fatigue, due to rising levels of the hormone progesterone. Morning sickness, which involves nausea and sometimes vomiting, can begin as early as two weeks into the pregnancy. Additionally, increased urination, heightened sense of smell, and mild cramping or spotting, known as implantation bleeding, may occur. These symptoms can be subtle and vary in intensity, making it important to take a pregnancy test and consult a healthcare provider for confirmation.
